Sun damaged skin

The No.1 cause of ageing is sun damage.

Gone are the days of basting yourself in searing heat to achieve a golden tan. Everything in moderation is good- including the sun. Its vitamin D content can genuinely make you feel better. Although excessive sun exposure is responsible for most of the skin damage associated with aging. This damage accumulates slowly over time. Much of the skin damage is merely cosmetic, but some effects, such as skin cancer, are more serious.

To protect itself from the damaging effects of the sun, your skin increases its production of melanocytes. These cells produce the dark brown pigment called melanin. Melanin is the dark brown pigment in the top layer of skin (epidermis) that gives skin its normal colour. This pigment protects the deeper layers of skin from sun damage. The more melanin in the skin, the darker the skin appears and the more protection it has against sun damage.

In some cases, the sun causes an uneven increase in melanocytes, which produces irregular colouring or pigmentation of the skin. The sun can also cause a permanent stretching (dilation) of small blood vessels, giving your skin a mottled, reddish appearance.

Also, with age our skin becomes weaker and less elastic. Collagen, the protein that makes up 80% of our skin, loses its ability to stretch and recoil and we develop wrinkles and age (liver) spots that make us look much older than we are.

Though people with medium or dark complexions naturally have more protection than do people with lighter complexions, they still can experience sun damage.
