Pigmentation Marks
Blemishes and brown spots on the skin are due to a process called Hyperpigmentation. This is caused by an area of the skin producing too much of a pigment called melanin.
There are mainly four types of hyperpigmentation:
1. Post inflammatory hyper pigmentation (PIH)- is caused by problems such as acne, rashes, scratch marks or an injury to the skin.
2. Melasma - is usually associated with hormonal factors such as pregnancy, birth control pills and menopausal changes. The dark spots often develop on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip.
3. Lentigines or liver spots - dark patches of different sizes seen in older individuals are due to sun damage.
4. Ephelides or freckles -these are small patches seen in young people with light complexioned skin that is prone to sun burns and exposed to the sun.
Irrespective of the cause, Dr Patel is an expert at treating pigmentation problems.
