Excessive Sweating
Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) can occur in people of either sex and develop at any age.
Sweating is a natural process that helps the body stay cool. In most cases, people sweat more in warm temperatures, when exercising, or in response to uncomfortable situations. However, excessive sweating occurs without such triggers. Those with hyperhidrosis appear to have overactive sweat glands. The uncontrollable sweating can affect people negatively in functional and social settings.
Excessive sweating affects the hands, feet, and armpits; it's called primary or focal hyperhidrosis. Primary hyperhidrosis affects 2 - 3% of the population. If the sweating occurs as a result of another medical condition, it is called secondary hyperhidrosis.
Excessive sweating is commonly an inherited condition and can affect those who suffer from it on a social, functional, and emotional level.
